Spirituality in the 21st Century
WEAVING A NEW STORY OF MEANING
Jeremy is well known for his eclectic approach to the integration of science and holistic spirituality, and he is also quite adept at presenting embodied spiritual wisdom streams across many traditions.
His arc of presentation for the weekend will be a brief introduction on Friday evening on how we construct our worldviews.
On Saturday morning, he will explore with us the implications of a worldview of deep interconnectedness, followed by embodied practices based on Liology, an integrated, embodied framework for well-being and spiritual groundedness.
On Saturday afternoon, he will introduce us to the inspiring vision of, and pathways to, a life-affirming “Ecological Civilization.”
Sara Thomsen's soulful music will be woven throughout, moving us all into sacred, shared “We” space, where our imagination and dreams will meet the world’s great needs. We are the ones we’ve been anticipating!
Please join us for what promises to be an inspiring, soul-transforming event!

DEEP ADAPTATION? DEEP TRANSFORMATION? OR BOTH?
A Live Conversation with Rupert Read and Jeremy Lent
Ecological philosopher and activist Rupert Read will be in live conversation with author Jeremy Lent on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, to discuss the path forward in response to the rapidly deteriorating climate and ecological crisis.
In this interactive conversation, Read and Lent will explore their shared and differing perspectives on the current ecological emergency, and the most effective active engagement to help divert our civilization’s current trajectory. Rather than debating different positions, they approach this conversation with a shared intention to build a deeper collective understanding of how to respond to the civilizational emergency. After their initial dialogue, audience members will be invited to ask questions to either or both of them. |
This online event will be hosted by the newly launched
Deep Transformation Network. It is free and open to all. Date: Wednesday, March 2, 2022 Time: 10:00 am Pacific/6:00 pm UK (1 hr and 15 minutes) |
Rupert Read, a reader in philosophy at the University of East Anglia, has been a prominent spokesperson for both the UK Green Party and Extinction Rebellion and has been instrumental in the Deep Adaptation movement founded in 2019 by Jem Bendell. In 2021, Read co-edited with Bendell a collection of essays entitled Deep Adaptation: Navigating the Realities of Climate Chaos. He has recently initiated a new project, called Transformative Adaptation (TrAd) to accelerate building resilience in response to system, climate, and ecological collapse.
Jeremy Lent, is an author and speaker whose work investigates the underlying causes of our civilization’s existential crisis, and explores pathways toward a life-affirming future. His recent book, The Web of Meaning, offers a foundation for an integrative worldview that could lead humanity to a sustainable, flourishing future. He has written extensively about the vision of, and pathways toward, an ecological civilization. In 2019, Lent engaged in a written dialogue with Jem Bendell critiquing aspects of Deep Adaptation and calling instead for Deep Transformation.

This course will cover the central themes of The Web of Meaning. How Should I Live? Why Am I? and Where Are We Going?
In each case, we will see how the answers provided by the dominant worldview are based on faulty foundations. Each week we will explore the rich and awe-inspiring pathways invited by an alternative worldview based on recognizing the intricate interrelationships that link our lives to those in our community, to all of humanity, and to the entire living Earth.
Each two-hour class will consist of presentations, breakout groups, and full group discussions. There will also be an online platform provided for group interaction between the weekly classes.

ONLINE WORKSHOP
ATTUNING TO THE WEB OF MEANING:
INTRODUCTION TO THE PRACTICE OF LIOLOGY
This worskhop offers a combination of didactic explanation, guided meditation, qigong, video clips, breakout groups, and general group discussion. The practices are intended to help integrate different domains of experience that are usually considered separate—mind and body, science and traditional wisdom, material and spiritual, inner subjectivity and social/political engagement—and show how meaning itself emerges as a function of their integration.
Following Jeremy Lent’s talk on Tuesday, Oct. 26 on the themes of his new book, The Web of Meaning, this workshop explores an integrative framework that attunes to the meaning that arises from our intrinsic connectedness within ourselves, with each other, and with the natural world.
Liology (pronounced lee‐ology) comes from the Chinese word li that means “the organizing principles.” This interactive workshop introduces Liology as an embodied investigation into the organizing principles of the dynamic patterns that make up our universe––what traditional Chinese sages called the Tao. It shows how core principles of love, harmony, and kindness can form the bedrock of an integrative worldview that could foster sustainable flourishing on a regenerated Earth. |

Who am I? Why am I? How should I live? These are some of the oldest questions humans have grappled with. In our modern, high-tech society we may seem to have the answers. After all, hasn’t science shown that humans are hardwired for selfishness? That we are separate from nature (which is ours to exploit)? That we do best when left alone to pursue our own individual goals? Jeremy Lent answers with a resounding “no”—not because he doesn’t like these conclusions, but because the latest science shows them to be false. What’s more, he argues that it is those ingrained but faulty beliefs that underlie the environmental and social unraveling now threatening our very survival. |

In conversation with George Hammond, author, Conversations with Socrates
Jeremy Lent returns to The Commonwealth Club to discuss the ideas in his new book, which weaves together the latest scientific findings with age-old philosophical insights to show how some of our most ingrained beliefs about human nature and the world are mistaken. Who am I? Why am I? How should I live? These are some of the oldest questions humans have grappled with. Our modern, high-tech society, having grown up in Darwins' shadow, assumes that humans are hardwired for selfishness, that we are separate from nature and so can exploit it, that we do best when left alone to pursue our own individual goals. |

Conversing with nature: how to move from 'ego' to 'eco' in the digital age.
How do we develop digital technologies in ways which bring out the best in our humanity? How, meanwhile, do we repair our relationship with the natural world?
In this session, we will explore the intersection of these two questions, so often treated as separate. In which ways can our gadgets, social platforms and breakthroughs in AI help us to care for the natural world? How can we converse with nature and appreciate an intelligence greater than our own? Can technology serve us in shifting our mindsets from ‘ego’ to ‘eco’? Join us and share your thoughts about these issues as Dan Nixon (Perspectiva) is joined in conversation by Jeremy Lent and Bonnitta Roy. |

How to Predict the Future: Conversation with K. D. Adamson
Our cultural values are shaped by their own historically evolved patterns. As a result, values are not simply given, but the result of the cultural heritage that has been passed on to us through previous generations.
What if we could change these patterns of interpretation? What if we could rearrange our values to create a better future? What steps would be necessary to do this? Our next boma studio should help the participants to understand their own interpretation patterns in a socio-economic context and to take a look into the future of humanity. Our experts on the subject are KD Adamson, writer and futurist with a focus on the dangers of global technologization, and Jeremy Lent, author of The Patterning Instinct and founder of the Liology Institute. |

A collective awareness of humanity's significant sustainability challenges is developing. How we respond to this across business and economy, as well as broader society will be key to the very essence of our existence. What do we move toward? What are the right steps? How did we get to where we are now?
Understanding the implications and possible answers to these questions and the 'Patterns of Meaning' within them will be important for the work ahead.
Please join us in our discussion with Jeremy Lent, a groundbreaking author who has looked under the surface of human society and culture to understand what moves and moulds the human systems we are part of. In addition to his work on an 'Ecological Civilization', we will be discussing his previous and forthcoming books and initiatives.
